Week Two: Seniors and Their Pets

Any pet owner knows the importance a furry companion has to one’s life. The bond between a pet and their owner makes them more than just a pet but rather a family member. Having a pet significantly improves the quality of life, especially for senior citizens.

The National Poll on Healthy Aging surveyed adults age 50-80 and found that 55% of these adults owned a pet. Among this group, 88% said that their pets helped them enjoy life and 86% reported that they made them feel loved. More than half of this group also said that their pets provided a sense of purpose and reduced their stress.

It is clear how important it is for seniors to maintain the lives of their pets to maintain the quality of their own lives. Animeals on Wheels stands by their mission of “sustaining healthy and respectful lives for vulnerable populations” by ensuring that both their clients and their pets receive the proper resources.

Cougar Paws for the Cause is donating directly to Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, so we can make a positive impact on the lives of the senior citizens in our community. By donating bagged, boxed or canned dog or cat food to Cougar Paws for the Cause, you also can help improve the life of someone here in your own city.

Meet an Animeals client

We’d like to introduce Richard Wright, one of the seniors receiving meals for both him and his pet, Mary Lou, through Meals on Wheels and Animeals. Richard worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for years since the 1970s. This caused him to develop a double hernia that required surgery and a colostomy bag. He was left with a permanent disability, which ultimately led him to Meals on Wheels. After Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017, Richard had to say goodbye to his home and Rocky, his adored Daschund. He then adopted his beloved Terrier named Mary Lou. Mr. Wright registered Mary Lou into the Animeals on Wheels program, which allowed him to both feed her and have her spade.

Richard is just one out of the 1,300 Meals on Wheels clients that could benefit from your donations to Cougar Paws for the Cause. It is an incredible honor to work with Animeals on Wheels so we can support someone like Mr. Wright. We find it so special to see the difference we are able to make in someone’s life, especially when it’s someone within our amazing Houston community.

Cougar Paws for the Cause would like to take the time to thank everyone for their donations. We are continuing to accept donations at the Bert F. Winston Band and Performance Complex and through our GoFundMe campaign. Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston is always looking for Animeals volunteers as well, so we highly encourage you to do so if you’re not able to make a physical or monetary donation.
